Using mostly the southern parcels in the large single vineyard of Pojega and with a high proportion of late-ripening Corvinone, all grapes are hand-picked and hand-sorted. Pojega is a historic vineyard next to the famous gardens of Pojega, bought in the 17th century by the Rizzardi family using the Double Veronese pergola vine training method.

This wine begins with a short maceration of de-stemmed grapes for 10 days in stainless steel temperature-controlled tanks. Followed by the secondary fermentation technique of “Ripasso”: refermentation on the un-pressed skins of both estate Amarone wines for 12 months in Slavonian oak and French oak. The 3rd remarkable vintage in a row for their single-vineyard Ripasso, 2017 continues in a similar vein to the previous two years with its richness and depth of dark berried fruit. Finishing dry and maintaining its hallmark freshness this is a vintage with everything in balance.

The complexity of this wine starts on the nose with black cherries, ripe plums, floral, herbal and savory notes. Rondinella adds floral notes to the aromas, Corvina brings elegance, aromas, and acidity with Corvinone contributing color, tannins and higher sugar levels. On tasting you will find a medium-bodied wine which coats the mouth beautifully with its concentrated fruit flavors; there is a long finish of cherries with a hint of warm spices such as cinnamon and raisins. The acidity is quite high which means that despite the fruits and full body, this is not a heavy wine at all. Tannins are very soft and the wine lovely and smooth.

This wine will keep on developing for two or three years in the bottle, becoming richer and its flavors moving towards the Amarone dried fruit flavor profile. In the interim, it is very drinkable and amazingly concentrated.

I enjoyed mine with Artikaas 3 year cow’s milk Gouda ($18.49/lb) and Jasper Hill Alpha Tolman Salami ($9.99/each).  Both are available in our cheese department. Salute!
