The tiny hilltop village of Monte Petriolo is the backdrop of the 4th generation Tiberi family's vineyard and homestead cantina. Nestled in the rolling hills of northern Umbria, at roughly 350 meters above sea level, on the south-west facing side of Lago di Trasimeno, this historic family of farmers and local winemakers are quickly becoming one of the stars of the new guard in Italian Natural Wine.  

The Tiberi's have roughly 3.5 hectares of vineyards planted on several small plots surrounding the family's homestead and cantina. A combination of native red and white Umbrian grape varieties including Gamay del Trasimeno/Grenache (considered 'native' to this part of Umbria), Canaiolo, Ciliegiolo, Grechetto, Trebbiano and San Colombana are planed on rocky schist, Marne and Galestro soils make the Tiberi's wines distinctive and special. The south-western exposure, rocky soil and dry Mediterranean winds leave these wines with a hearty, spicy and rustic backbone.  

The wine is bottled during its initial fermentation when the yeast is still eating the natural sugar. Because the fermentation finishes in the bottle the CO2 dissolves back into the wine and makes it fizzy. It's how sparkling wine was made way long ago before Champagne became Champagne. Ciliegiolo looks like unpolished rubies and drinking it is like waltzing with a treasured memory from an adolescent summer. It smells like cherry-flavored Bonne Bell Lip-Smackers and tight red roses drifting on a sea breeze. You’d swear it was the best Shirley Temple you’ve ever had when you first sip it—fresh and fizzy cherry juice with a squeeze of lime that gives it a flirtatious acidity. But “Il Musticco” finishes with a long sigh of deep strawberries, red currant, a touch of tobacco, and plenty of sandstone. It’s the levity of youth and the weight of wisdom in a single glass. I really think this would be killer with Burrata and Prosciutto drizzled with honey, or some kind of salted pork roast!  Now I'm making myself hungry. This is so good!
