2015 TOP WINES

A FIRST CLASS FLIGHT

Pre-Boarding: Destination: Jura, France.

FRANCOIS MONTAND BLANC DE BLANCS NV  $13.99

Fleeing Nazi-occupied Champagne in 1940s, Francois brought only a handful of vines to the Free Zone of the Jura.  Thanks to his expertise gained in Champagne, we may now enjoy this fantastic sparkling wine.  Comprised of Chardonnay, Colombard and Ugni Blanc and produced in the Methode Traditionnelle, it shows pear, quince, ginger, brioche and a hint of walnut on a fine mousse leading to a crisp, lingering finish.

FLIGHT 2015W

Four Fabulous Whites From Around The World.

First Leg: Kamptal, Austria.

2014 STEININGER GRUNER VELTLINER  $14.99

A standout Gruner from one of the best wineries in all of Europe!  Pear, white pepper and lemon zest seamlessly combine in this balanced and racy white.  It pairs with practically everything but may we suggest some Appenzeller cheese?

Second Leg: Loire Valley, France.

2014 DOM. DE LA PEPIERE MUSCADET DE SEVRE ET MAINE  $13.99

The Atlantic is in the air and soil of this portion of the Loire.  From 40+ year old vines of Melon de Bourgogne, this wine has citrus, minerals and brine carried on a soft-bodied frame the result of extended contact with the fruit’s natural yeasts or lees.  In a word, quenching.  Classically paired with seafood, we love it with a fresh Farmer’s Cheese as well.

Third Leg: Willamette Valley, Oregon.

2014 ELK COVE PINOT GRIS  $15.99

Superbly balanced, aromatic, snappy and rich.  Lemon, pineapple, pear and ginger ride a soft texture while simultaneously there’s crisp acidity and focus.  Serve with salmon, pasta, chicken or just a warm smile.  Chevre’s bestie too!

Fourth Leg: Finger Lakes, NY

2014 FOX RUN VINEYARDS CHARDONNAY  $11.99

This unoaked beauty is sourced from some of the oldest Chardonnay vines (30+ yrs.) in the region.  A pure expression of the grape with richness provided by extended time on the lees balanced with bright acidity.  Great with risotto but don’t forget to try it with Stilton.

FLIGHT 2015R

Six Sensational Reds From Around The World.

First Leg: California.

2013 SIMPLE LIFE PINOT NOIR  $9.99

The next generation of the Sebastiani Family brings us this everyday Pinot that over-delivers on all counts.  Cherry, herbs, nutmeg, plum & cranberry provide a complex flavor profile while zesty acidity and a silky finish bring it all together.  Delicious!  This wine kills with figs and goat cheese.

Second Leg: Bierzo, Spain

2014 ARMAS DE GUERRA MENCIA  $8.99

Vinos Guerra, founded in 1879, is the oldest winery in the Bierzo region of NW Spain.  The Mencia vines that produced this sweetheart are 50+ yrs. old, unheard of for wines of this price.  Fans of Mencia will revel in this unoaked super bargain, while newcomers will be rewarded with dark fruit, faint smokiness, slatey minerality and tannic grip on its balanced finish.  Serve with Steak Tartare, Calamari or a Blue Cheese.  We dig Roquefort.

 Third Leg: Abruzzo, Italy

2014 FARNESE FANTINI MONTEPULCIANO D’ABRUZZO  $11.99

It’s so easy to love this seemingly simple red.  Lush black cherry, floral and spicy notes with lifted acidity create perfect balance.  If you’ve been burned by low-grade Tuscan reds in this price range before, seek sanctuary here, Paisan.  It goes without saying, a perfect pasta partner that’s Parm friendly too.

 Fourth Leg: The Veneto, Italy

2013 BERTOLDI GRAN PASSIONE VENETO IGT ROSSO  $12.99

Our “Baby Amarone”, this Merlot-Corvina blend is produced using the passito method which involves using dried fruit for a concentrated expression of the grapes so beloved by Amarone enthusiasts.  Bold, rich and aromatic, the intellectual hedonist’s choice and a perfect accompaniment to Osso Bucco and/or Parm.

 Fifth Leg: Toro, Spain

2007 BODEGAS REJADORADA TEMPLE TINTO DE TORO  $16.99

The Toro region is home to arguably the finest Tempranillo in all of Spain. 30+ yr. old vines, black fruits, cassis, floral aromatics and supple tannins are all here in this stunner. Powerful, yet elegant, this is a STEAL at this price!! WE LOVE THIS WINE!!!

 6th Leg: Bordeaux, France

Your Final Destination

2011 CHAT. BEAUSEJOUR PENTIMENTO MONTAGNE-ST. EMILION $22.99

Named as a homage to playwright Lillian Hellman’s memoir Pentimento, winemaker Michele D’Aprix has crafted this amazing Right Bank blend of Merlot & Cabernet Franc that showcases the dark fruit, earthy minerality (the label bears the chemical representation of the soils of the estate) and elegant tannins that are the hallmarks of great Bordeaux. We’ll gladly accept this wine and won’t miss the “Growths” one bit.
