MAY 2021
CELLAR CLUB
Ah, La Dolce Vita! Italy has long stood as one of the most well-loved wine producers in the world. This month we are highlighting two very special wines coming out of Italy that we believe highlight some of the best that the terroir has to offer.
Thank you for being a member of
The Cellar Club, cheers!
Wine Pick #1:
Tenuta di Capezzana
Barco Reale di Carmignano DOC 2016
Carmignano, Tuscany, Italy
May is Italian wine month and we couldn’t be happier! If you could only enjoy the wines of a single country, Italy would be a great choice as few countries can boast of such a combination of variety and quality. This red selection comes from one of the oldest recognized wine-producing areas in Tuscany, with evidence of Etruscan viniculture dating back 3,000 years! The Capezzana property was founded in 805 A.D., as evidenced by archives in nearby Florence. The Medici family hand can be felt in the introduction of French varietals to the Carmignano region and one can argue that “Super Tuscan” wines were crafted here 450 years prior to their “birth.” The Contini Bonacossi Family has been the stewards of this historic property for five generations and today employs organic practices and minimal interventional winemaking to create wines of transparent beauty. They exemplify the Italian ability to be both historic and modern simultaneously.
Wine Pick #2
Francesco Cirelli Trebbiano d’Abruzzo 2019
Pescara, Abruzzo, Italy
“When I make wine, I imagine I am an alchemist preparing a magic potion. An antidote to misery, a balm for healing old wounds, a drink that makes us forgive but not forget. An existential declaration, a message of unconditional love.” - Francesco Cirelli
Can one ask more of any winemaker? The passion that Cirelli brings is not limited to his winery. They grow and press olives, grow fruits and vegetables, raise animals from cattle to geese, all in harmony with the land itself. Since acquiring the property in 2003, his goal has been to practice fully integrated agriculture as once was done in the past. His winemaking philosophy is one of non-intervention where less can be more and each vintage dictates what each wine will become. His aspirational approach allows for wines that are both natural and pure pleasure. This month's selection serves as a fine exemplar of wines from, perhaps, the greatest of the wine-producing countries of the world. Viva Italia!
CHEESE PAIRING OF THE MONTH:
Ubriacone
Ubriacone is an affectionate term in Italian for the “great big drunk.” A delicious cow’s milk cheese bathed in a mixture of local Clinton and Raboso wine, it is then pierced like gorgonzola to let the aroma and flavor of the wine permeate the cheese to a new degree. It is sharp and fruity on the nose. The pliable paste with a slight crumble is not only visually stunning, with its purple-hued striations, but it also contains a nutty flavor that is quickly followed by a bright winey finish. The cheese is covered with grape leaves to cover the holes of the piercing so that the mold will not grow in the holes.
