JANUARY 2023
CELLAR CLUB
This January we are learning all about 'hygge'!
Pronounced “hyoo-guh,” this Danish word has no direct translation in English, though “cozy” comes close.
January is a wonderful time to engage in "Hygge"! Whether it is enjoying a glass of wine after a day at the slopes, a hearty pasta dinner, or delicious robust cheeses, you are sure to feel the winter warmth.
This month we have selected two wonderful wines to enjoy while cozied up at home and to brighten the winter days ahead!
Wine Pick #1:
Lievland Vineyards
Old Vines Chenin Blanc 2021
Western Cape, South Africa
Lievland, directly translated, means “love land” and there are few who come to this farm that isn’t charmed by its bucolic beauty. Twenty years ago, Lievland was considered one of South Africa’s top estates. José Conde and Tyrrel Myburgh, partners in MAN Family Wines, purchased the farm in late 2017 with the goal of resurrecting it to its former glory. Today, the winery produces a range of three wines: Pinotage, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Chenin Blanc!
Wine Pick #2
Caparzo Rosso di Montalcino 2019
Montalcino, Tuscany, Italy
The history of Caparzo dates back to the end of the 1960s at the dawning of Brunello di Montalcino, when a group of friends, fond of Tuscany and of wine, purchased an old ruin with vineyards at Montalcino. The farm estate was renovated, modernized, and new vineyards were planted. In 1998, 30 years after the first rows of vines were planted, the farm estate came to a turning point when Elisabetta Gnudi Angelini purchased Caparzo. With the help of her son, Igino, and daughter, Alessandra, she immediately carried out her objective: combining tradition with innovation to create a high-quality wine that is the expression of an excellent territory.
CHEESE PAIRING OF THE MONTH:
Ice House Farms Herbed Chèvre
Ice House Farm was started by Morgan & Chad Beckwith in 2016 with the goal of producing healthy delicious goat milk. They produce a wide variety of goat's milk cheeses, yogurts, and more! This delicious offering is their classic chèvre mixed with an amazing combination of Organic Herbs de Provence and Red Pepper Flakes. This chèvre is classically soft and lightly tangy with savory notes and a slight kick! Spread this chèvre over your morning toast or pair it with smoked salmon for a wonderful après ski snack.
