Wine Pick #1:
El Porvenir Amauta Absoluto Tannat 2020
Cafayate Valley, Argentina
While El Porvenir was founded by the Romero-Marcuzzi family in 2000, winemaking has been practiced at the site since the 1800s. The family has been an integral part of the Cafayate community and proven to be one of the benchmark wineries of the Salta region of Northwest Argentina. Now headed by Lucia Romero-Marcuzzi, the family and wines show love and respect for the local terroir and strive to maintain the legacy of their ancestors while incorporating current viticulture and winemaking techniques. Sourcing from vineyards at extreme elevations, their fruit benefits from abundant sunshine and profound daily temperature shifts resulting in wonderfully balanced wines. This Tannat maintains the fierce backbone of its French ancestors but is allowed to fully integrate with the fruit and lift to achieve maturity in its youth. We can think of no finer introduction to this varietal.
Wine Pick #2
Rogue Vine Pipeño Blanco 2020
Guarilihue, Itata Valley, Chile
Leo Erazo and Justin Decker started Rogue Vine in 2011 in a one-car garage in Concepcion, Chile. They make wines from the Nipas and Guarilihue subregions of the Itata Valley. All the vineyards are composed of hillside, dry-farmed bush vines that are a minimum of 60 years old rooted in Granite-rich soils with touches of clay and quartz. Their ethos is simple winemaking that employs native yeast, concrete globes, or old barrels, no corrections, and minimal to no sulfur at bottling. Horses are used for plowing and all vineyard work is done by hand in keeping with the centuries-old traditions of the Itata Valley. Rogue Vine, from its inception, believes in promoting the rich culture and history of this long-neglected and rural farming community. This delicious field blend is both as simple as the path to work and as profound as the road to bliss.
CHEESE PAIRING OF THE MONTH:
Tomme de Savoie
Tomme is a name given to a family of cheeses produced in the French Alps and Switzerland. Generally, all Tomme cheeses are named after the village where they are produced. Tomme de Savoie is one such variety of Tomme cheese made in the Savoie region of northwestern France.
Tomme de Savoie is made from raw, skimmed cow’s milk after the cream has been drained off to make butter. Tomme de Savoie is a semi-soft, pressed cheese with a pliable and firm texture. It has numerous irregular “eyes” spread throughout the ivory-colored paste. The flavors are grass, nuts, and rusticity. Expect some tangy, slight citrus and mushroom notes as well.
